Uruguay has enjoyed stable growth since 2004 with an average annual growth rate of 6.1%. Approximately 89% of the population live in cities and the majority of the workforce is employed in services. Nonetheless, the economy is to a large extent based on export-oriented agriculture.
The main industries include food processing, electrical machinery, transportation equipment, petroleum products, textiles, chemicals and beverages. ICT and financial services are also major business sectors.
Uruguay is member of MERCOSUR and is positioned as a potential regional trade hub for South America’s Southern cone region.
