The economy of Paraguay is dominated by agriculture and is characterised by a large informal sector. Exports include soybeans, feed, cotton, meat, edible oils, wood and leather.
The country has a small mining sector. In 2010, however, CIC Mining Resources claimed discovery of what may be the biggest deposit of titanium in the world. Local industries include pharmaceuticals, textiles, food processing and steel.
Paraguay has great potential in hydroelectric energy. The Itaipu Dam is the second largest hydroelectric generation facility in the world, and is operated jointly with Brazil. The country is a member of MERCOSUR.
