Key Competitive Attractions
Guyana is the only country in South America with English as the official language. The economy is largely export-oriented. Principal products include sugar, gold, bauxite, shrimp, timber, and rice. These six commodities account for nearly 60% of the country’s GDP.
In terms of foreign investment, the government has identified the following priority sectors: agriculture and agro-processing, light manufacturing, tourism, ICT and energy. Foreign direct investment in the last years has been largely concentrated in agriculture and seafood, wood products, mining and ICT sectors. At the same time, furniture and other manufactured wood products are becoming important export commodities.
Guyana is member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and also benefits from the US-Caribbean Trade Partnership.
