The economy of Ecuador is based primarily on the export of oil, bananas, shrimp and gold. Oil accounts for approximately 40% of export earnings and the country is the largest exporter of bananas in the world. Other export products include flowers, cacao, coffee, hemp, wood and fish.
Industry is for the most part oriented towards the domestic market. The principal sectors are petroleum, food processing, textiles, wood products and chemicals.
Ecuador is member of the Andean Community (CAN) and the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI). It is also an associate member to MERCOSUR. The country adopted the US dollar as currency in response to the financial crisis, which began in 1999.
