Colombia is included in the acronym CIVETS, identifying the country as part of the next generation of emerging economies. The term was coined by the CEO of HSBC in 2010, pointing to the diversity and dynamism of the economies in question.
In eight years, inward flows of direct investment have grown by 200%, exports have grown by 174% and tourism has grown by 132%. In 2002, Colombia received FDI flows of up to USD 2,1 billion. In 2009, the figure had risen to USD 7.2 billion. Several major international companies have made multi-million dollar investments, including SAB Miller, Drummond, Votorantim, Phillip Morris and GE Money.
In the 2011 Doing Business Report, The World Bank ranked Colombia as the third most business friendly country in Latin America. The country was ranked number one in terms of investment protection and fifth globally.
Colombia has 12 Free Trade agreements with 48 different countries.
