Argentina has the eighth largest landmass in the world, and the third biggest population in South America (40.6 million). It was ranked 4th among developing countries in the Quality of Life Index 2010 (International Living).
The country is home to about 2,000 multinational companies, operating in various business sectors, including agro-industries, automotives, chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, ICT, finance and retail.
The country’s most important export items are soybean derivatives, corn, wheat, sunflower seed oil, transport and cargo vehicles, crude oil and petroleum, ship and airplane fuels. Argentina is also one of the main automotive producers in the region.
Mineral resources include lead, zinc, tin, silver, potassium, copper and gold. The province of San Juan is home to one of the biggest veins of gold and silver in the world.
Argentina is member of MERCOSUR and has a Preferential Trade Agreement with India. Further agreements are being negotiated with Israel, the Southern African Customs Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the EU.
According to UNESCO, Argentina has the second highest literacy and school life expectancy rates in the region, comparable to Spain or Israel. It is the leading country in terms of university attendance and has the highest number of Nobel prizes in Latin America, Argentina also has the highest level of patents registered at the U.S. Patent Trademark Office in South America.
