Key Competitive Attractions
Uganda has one of the highest levels of foreign direct investment in the East Africa Region. In 2009, the country attracted FDI of up to US$ 799 million. In addition, GDP growth has been stable at an average of 7.7% since 2000.
Uganda is a leading producer of coffee and bananas as well as tea, cotton, cereals, nut, fruits and vegetables. There are also plenty of investment opportunities in fish farming, wood processing, renewable energy, financial services and ICT.
The country sits on unexploited mineral deposits, including phosphate, gold, zinc, wolfram, petroleum, diamond, vermiculite and silica.
Manufacturing activities include beverages, leather, tobacco, paper, textiles, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, glass, fertilizers and assembly of electronic goods, hi-tech and medical products.
The economy was ranked the 4th freest in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 2009 Index of Economic Freedom.
Uganda is a member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern African states (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC). It also has preferential trade agreements with the EU and USA.
Assistance and Support For New Business Investors
The Uganda Investment Authority works to promote and facilitate investment projects. Services include information on investment opportunities, the issuance of investment licences, assistance in locating relevant project support services, assistance in the acquisition of industrial land and assistance in seeking joint venture partners and funding.
