The main economic activity in Togo is subsistence agriculture. The country is largely self-sufficient in food crops. The major agricultural exports are coffee, cocoa and cotton.
In terms of mineral deposits, Togo’s most valuable export commodity is phosphate, of which the country has an estimated 60 million metric tonnes. It is the world's fourth-largest producer. Togo also has substantial limestone and marble deposits.
The port city of Lomé is a significant regional trading centre and a docking point for goods headed to inland countries: Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Togo has also traditionally served as a regional banking centre.
Togo is member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). Both the ECOWAS development fund and the West African Development Bank (associated with UEMOA) are based in Lomé.
