Key Competitive Attractions

The economy of the Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, is based primarily on oil extraction.

The country also has significant mineral deposits: iron, potassium, phosphate, zinc, manganese, gold, silver and diamonds. Primary mining regions are Kouilou, Niari, Cuvette, Sangha and Likouala.

The oil sector is offshore and is dominated by foreign firms: Elf, Agip, Chevron, CMS Nomeco and Exxon Mobil.

Prior to the discovery of oil, Congo’s biggest export earner was timber. Still today, forestry generates 10% of export earnings. Agriculture is relatively under-exploited though the country continues to export coffee, palm oil, sugar, potatoes and cacao.
