Mauritius has one of the highest GDPs per capita and highest growth rates in sub-Saharan Africa. The country was ranked number 1 in the 2008 Ibrahim Index of African Governance and 17 on a global scale in the World Bank Doing Business Report of 2010.
The economy is largely oriented towards the service sector (70% of GDP). Traditional business sectors are tourism and manufacturing, but several new knowledge-based sectors are emerging, such as ICT, business process outsourcing and healthcare.
Mauritius is located within relative proximity of three world regions: Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The country is at the same time home to a remarkable blend of cultures: European, African, Indian and Chinese. In addition, Mauritius benefits from a convenient time zone (GMT +4) to accommodate 24-hour global transactions.
Mauritius is member of COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) and SADC (Southern African Development Community). The country also enjoys preferential trade agreements with the EU and USA.
Personal and corporate income tax are set at a flat 15%. Dividends are tax free and export-oriented companies may be exempt from custom duties.
