Key Competitive Attractions

Malawi is a landlocked country in South-central Africa. It is home to Lake Malawi, which is the third largest fresh water lake in Africa. The landscape is extremely rich and diverse. The Mulanje Mountain is the highest mountain in Central Africa, at over 3,000 metres above sea level. The country, therefore, has considerable growth opportunities in eco-tourism and forestry.

The most important sector of the economy is agriculture. Principal sub-sectors include dairy and livestock, fish, horticulture, tobacco, tea, soy bean processing and cotton production. Indian and Chinese investors are the basis for the country’s growing textiles industry.

The country has a wealth of mineral resources, including coal, limestone and gemstones. Potential exploration targets include gold, uranium, platinum, nickel, copper, phosphates and graphite.

Malawi is member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The country also has a preferential trade agreement with the United States.
