Key Competitive Attractions

With a population exceeding 80 million, Ethiopia is the second most populated country in Africa. It is, thus, potentially one of the largest domestic markets on the continent. In terms of GDP growth, Ethiopia has on average experienced a double-digit rate for the last decade (11.5%).

The economy is based on agriculture, which accounts for approximately 43% of GDP and 86% of foreign currency earnings. Main products include coffee, pulses, oilseeds, cereals, potatoes, sugarcane, and vegetables. Ethiopia is a major exporter of coffee, flower and maize.

Ethiopia is member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The country also enjoys preferential trade agreements with the EU and USA. The country has traditionally had no private sector. However, since 1992 the investment regime has been liberalised three times, in order to attract foreign investment to various sectors of the economy.
