Djibouti is located along one of the world’s principal shipping lanes, on the crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia. The economy is service-oriented, principally through the operations of the international port of Djibouti. The country has a status as free trade zone in northeast Africa.
The port has total capacity of more than 10 million tonnes of goods annually, and is managed by Dubai Ports World. The port serves as a transit port and includes facilities for transshipment and refuelling. A second container terminal is under construction at Doraleh.
The main exports of Djibouti are salt, livestock and fish. The country is member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The official languages are French and Arabic.
