The economy of Côte d'Ivoire is based primarily on agriculture. The country is among the world’s largest producers and exporters of coffee, cocoa beans, and palm oil. Tropical woods are also among the principal export items. Other exports include petroleum, cotton, bananas, pineapples and fish.
By the standards of Sub-Saharan Africa, Côte d'Ivoire is recognised as having excellent infrastructure networks. The country has more than 13,000 km of paved roads, two active ports, rail links in the process of being upgraded, regular flights to Europe, extensive telecommunications networks and a good stock of commercial, industrial, retail and residential property. As a consequence, the country is a popular hub for western expatriates conducting business in Western Africa.
Foreign direct investment accounts for 40% to 45% of total capital in Ivorian companies. By far the largest source of investment is France.
