The economy of Chad is largely informal and the vast majority of the population are engaged in subsistence farming. Oil exploration was restarted in 2000, and by 2008 oil already accounted for 47% of GDP.
Besides oil, Chad’s primary exports are cotton, cattle and gum Arabic. Livestock is herded across borders to neighbouring countries. The country also sells smoked and dried fish. Other food crops include pearl millet, sorghum, peanuts, rice, sweet potatoes, manioc, cassava, and yams.
