The economy of Burundi is based on agriculture, which accounts for over 50% of GDP and supports around 70% of the labour force. The country is potentially self-sufficient in food production, but is currently a net food importer due to disruptions of civil war and the effects of soil erosion.
Principal exports include coffee, tea, sugar, cotton and hides. The country is in particular dependant on the export of coffee, which generates almost 90% of export revenue. Burundi has potential deposits of petroleum, nickel and copper.
