Botswana has Africa’s longest continuous multi-party democracy and one of the continent’s highest rates of GDP per capita. According to Transparency International, Botswana is the least corrupt country in Africa.
The country’s biggest export item is diamonds. In terms of value, Botswana is the largest exporter in the world. Manufacturing industries include textiles and leather goods, diamond processing, canned beef products and glass products. The country offers some of the lowest tax rates in Africa. Corporate income tax is normally capped at 25%, but is lowered to 15% for certain categories of manufacturing and for companies operating within the jurisdiction of the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). VAT is set at 10% for standard rated supplies and 0% for zero-rated supplies.
